Everywhere in the US men gathered to realize their dream…to become US fighting men.  They came in all sizes and shapes, tall, short, scrawny, and muscle on muscle.  They all wanted that AI stamp on their military papers and then they would all be fighting next to one another in the trenches.  Then, there was Steve Rogers…what a site.  He wasn’t tall, strong or even capable of being considered any where near a soldier.  BUT there is one thing he had…a HUGE heart and he wanted more than anything to be part of the war effort.  He stood in front of the Dr. who could give him a passing grade.  The Dr. shook his head, “Young man, you are the worst recruit I have seen come through here.  I could deny you just on your asthma alone but you have every ailment known to man!”  he continued, “I have to classify you as 4F which means you failed on every level.”

Steve was depressed as he sulked out of the recruiting station.  He had failed again.  How many times would he continue to be denied.  He made his way to a movie theater to learn how the war effort was going.  As the screen blazed with a newsreel showing scenes from the war, he saw a half-eaten pop corn flying towards the screen, “They got themselves into this…they can get themselves out!” he angrily screamed.  Steve was looking for a fight since he left the recruiting station…”Hey buddy, do you want to take this outside?”  He spun around to face the oaf…and then the ‘oaf’ stood..he was HUGE!  For a second, he pictured himself as a patient in the local hospital.  In the alley Steve barely avoided haymakers that would have knocked out a bull and even managed to land a few.  But the guy was just too powerful!  He hoisted Steve above his head and slammed him to the sloppy wet street.  The coolness of the dirty water kept him from passing out from the shock.  Through swollen eyes he spied a garbage lid.  He could see that the bully was about to land a devastating punch to his head when he grabbed the lid and used it as a shield and close his eyes waiting for the blow…he could sense it coming as he opened one eye.  “SMACK!!!!”  He heard it but didn’t feel anything.  He looked up to see his best friend “Bucky” James Barnes catch the guys fist in mid-air.  Bucky gave the guy a quick kick in the butt and sent him sprawling in the alley.  The guy took off realizing that fighting 2 guys would not be in his best interest.

Bucky helped Steve to his feet and noticed that once again, he saw another 4F rejection slip sticking from Steve’s breast pocket.  “Come on Steve…seriously…did you try to enlist AGAIN?”  Steve nodded.  Bucky just didn’t understand.  After all, Bucky was going off to fight for his country and standing there in his military uniform, Steve  was envious.  Bucky was headed out on a flight to England tomorrow and for the first time in their lives, they would be separated.  Bucky realized that Steve was taking his departure hard so he called Steve’s attention to a newspaper on the ground.  The headline read, “World of Tomorrow” exhibit.  Maybe seeing what the future might be would help Steve forget the past for awhile.

The exhibit was amazing.  Their was a monorail running in the rafters of the building.  A beautiful lady stood on a rotating stage next to a futuristic looking Cadillac.  One sign said “Stark Industries“.  “Steve, I’ve read about this guy…Howard Stark.  He’s always inventing something new and loves the ladies!”, he grinned.  Steve barely heard what Bucky was saying because he had spied another recruitment ctr.  Bucky saw that there was no reasoning with Steve so he turned Steve around and offered his hand as a good luck good-bye.  “Steve, you are the most tough-minded person I have ever known!  I wish you were going with me!  Go do what you have to do and hopefully you will be joining me some day soon!”

Steve watched as Bucky walked out of site.  He turned and gritted his teeth and walked through the door of the recruitment area.  Steve saw and older gentleman greeting everyone standing next to a sign with ‘SSR, US Army’ written across it.  “What’s that?”, Steve asked the man pointing to the sign.  “It stands for the “Special Science Reserve” said the gentleman with a hint of German in his voice.  “You want to be a soldier?”, the man asked.  Steve nodded…more than you know, he thought!  Steve asked the man, “Is this part of the US military?”  The man said “Yes it is and what is your name, young man?”  Steve showed the man his ID and the Dr. went to retrieve Steve’s records collected throughout the area on every potential soldier.  The Dr. reached for Steve’s hand to shake it and introduced himself, “My name is Dr. Erskine…I can’t believe you are here.  You have been rejected numerous times in different centers.  You are a very tenacious young man.  “Why do you want to become a soldier?”  Steve took a step closer to the Dr inches from is face and looked deep into the Dr’s eyes.  The Dr. had never witnessed such steely focus…a chill went through his spine.  Through clenched jaw Steve said, “I don’t like bullies!”

The Dr. reached for his stamp.  Steve held his breath.  The Dr. paused and gave Steve the once-over.  He couldn’t remember a more poor specimen of a man.  Too thin and sickly looking and his file was full of problems that you do not look for in a US “ground-pounder”.  But, he could not forget Steve’s steely gaze.  He probably saw that gaze in maybe 2 other men in his life.  He was curious to see how well Steve would do.  The Dr. picked up Steve’s folder and wrote something on it.  Then Steve saw the stamp.  “Young man, don’t disappoint me.  You passed this time.”  Steve made it!

There he was…standing with other men at a secret base just about to meet their commanding officer.  However, first an English women had introduced herself as Peggy Carter, Special Agent.  The man standing next to her was Col. Chester Phillips.  He was a tough vet with very little patience for recruits.  The Dr Steve met earlier along with these 2 would be the trainers in the camp.  And to everyone’s surprise the training started NOW!  There was a lot of screaming and orders being barked and before the recruits knew it, they were standing in front of an obstacle course.  Steve did his best but it just wasn’t good enough.  He tripped and slipped and tumbled awkwardly over every challenge  all the while hearing the Colonel barking, “We want to create the greatest military weapons on the planet…one of you men will be that perfect weapon to start the one-of-a-kind Army!”.  The Colonel cast a disapproving gaze towards Steve as he fell face first in the mud.

However, Steve’s determination and grit did not go unnoticed!  Every time he tried to get through or over and obstacle some of the men would step on him or trip him in the hopes of getting ahead or pushing him out.  That only made Rogers more determined!  He pressed on not willing to give up.  The trainers liked what they saw.  Here was a man that no matter what was thrown at him he would continue to push forward.  He had the heart of a lion!  They all decided that Steve Rogers was their guy.

When Steve came out of the shower he found himself alone in the barracks.  A private was sitting on a bed and told him to get dressed and packed and wait here until someone came for him.  Steve’s heart sunk, he thought he had failed.  However, he knew to follow orders and so he sat and waited for the axe to fall.  He heard the door open and there was Dr. Erskine walking through the door.  The Dr. said, “Congratulations!  You are the one we have picked!”  Steve was excited but wondered why him after he saw the type of men that were turned away.  Dr. Erskine told Steve that he had worked for the Germans years before.  He went on to share that he had developed a serum that could change average men into super-soldiers.  Yeah…right Steve thought…this is just science fiction.  The Dr. went on to tell Rogers that an evil organization known as HYDRA wanted the serum-especially their leader Johann Schmidt!  Johann took the serum and swallowed it himself with catastrophic results.  Erskine went on to say that the problem with the serum is that it amplifies what is inside a man, “Good becomes greater, the best become better, the evil in a man becomes worse…such was the fate of Schmidt.  Regarding why we picked you?  You are obviously not the perfect fighting man but you are a GOOD man!”

Overnight, Steve was flown to a top secret base in the bowels of Brooklyn.  Inside techs manned their stations behind huge machines and monitors.  Steve looked above the floor and saw an observation room with the top brass and men in 3-piece suits.  In the middle of the floor was a large man-shaped missile looking machine.  He heard the techs call it “Rebirth”.  Steve was led to the device and he gulped as he lay down inside.  Rogers looked around the room and notice a young man in a suit adjusting various knobs and dials on the machinery.  “Are you ready Mr. Stark?,” Dr. Erskine asked as he adjusted the injectors carrying the blue serum.  Steve was surprised to finally meet the man Bucky gushed about.  “Yeah…we’re ready when you are!”  Stark said.  The Dr. motioned for a technician to apply the pads that carried thousands of little needles to Steve’s skin and then connected their tubing to the injectors.  A loud siren went off making Steve jump!  All the technicians and VIPs now focused their attention on Steve and got very quiet…Steve could hear his heart beating…literally!  He barely heard the Dr. count down, “3, 2, 1, now!”  With that, the pads grabbed hold of his skin and injected the fluid into his body as the doors to the Rebirther closed shut.  Steve felt his body catch fire!  His eyes glowed blue and he shook like a leaf in a hurricane!  A curl of blue smoke sifted through the slight crack on the ReBirth door.  Stark walked slowly to the machine and opened the door.  Techs from all over craned their necks to see if the serum was a success but could not see through the smoke that poured out of the machine.  Steve stepped through the smoke and he heard gasps from all over the room.  Instead of the punky looking specimen that walked into the machine now stood a much taller and ripped muscled man of war…The experiment was a success!  His dream was about to come true…he was going over to serve his country as the very first super-soldier…Captain America!
